Renewing a driving licence at 45: The right to drive a certain vehicle changes when you reach the age of 45. From the age of 45 to 65, you must renew your driver’s licence every 5 years if you want to drive HGV’s. Once you reach the age of 65, you must renew your HGV licence on an annual basis.
Typically, the DVLA will send you two forms 56 days before your driving licence expires. The two distinct forms are as follows:
- D47P which is the application to renew your HGV entitlement.
- D4 your HGV medical examination report.
If you do not receive your D47P and D4, contact the DVLA and request a D2/D4 pack. In Northern Ireland, renewing a driving licence for HGV’s after the age of 45 differs.
Now it’s time to apply for your licence after turning 45
- The first step is to complete form D47P with the requested information.
- Most people request that their doctor fill out their D4, which is the medical examination report. Your doctor may be unable to complete the vision evaluation section. In this case, you can have an optometrist or an optician fill out this section on your behalf. Please keep in mind that you may be charged for this step.

Changing your photograph
If your licence application requires a new photograph, the D47P form will prompt you. You will need to include a new passport-style photo with your documents in this case.
If your Surname changes
It is normal for your name to change (e.g. you got married). You must also in this case:
Return form D2, titled ‘Application for a driving licence for a lorry, minibus, or bus,’ to the DVLA. Please send original documentation confirming your name change.
Traditional Paper Licences
If you have a paper driver’s licence, follow these steps:
- Fill out two different forms, D47P and D4.
- Send original documents proving your identity.
- Include a passport-sized photograph.
- Send all forms and documents, along with a photograph, to the DVLA in Swansea.
How long does it take to renew a Driver’s Licence at 45?
The DVLA makes every effort to issue new photocard driving licences within three (3) weeks of receiving an application. However, if they need to check any medical or personal information, it may take a little longer. As a result, give yourself at least three weeks before contacting the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
Driving while waiting for your new licence
If you meet all of the requirements, you can drive while your licence is being renewed by the DVLA. To continue driving, all of the following must be met:
- Your doctor concurs your decision to continue driving.
- You had a valid licence and were driving under the same conditions as before.
- The new licence application is less than a year old.
- The previous licence was not revoked or denied for medical reasons.
- You are not currently disqualified from driving or a high risk offender on or after June 1, 2013.
